The project is aimed to beautify the entrance of North Road on Marine Drive.

Many have been wondering what is happening on the corner of Marine Drive and North Road in Oslo Beach. The Herald has fielded numerous calls recently regarding the site clearance.

Some of the feedback from residents has been positive, while others are furious about the clearing of prime coastal land along the main road.

The new project, called the North Road Garden Project, is being administered by Veedesh Deveduth from G4A Security, with the major sponsor being Lazer911 Security, residents from North Road and businessmen from Port Shepstone.

“It’s hoped that all North Road residents become involved. Although it’s Transnet property, we are environmentally conscious and have ensured that no indigenous plants or trees have been removed. This project will be extended to beautify the two dead ends on North Road (My Den and My Yen) and a permanent beach clean up programme will be put in place. CCTV cameras will monitor various spots and we will make these areas as safe as possible.” explained Mr Deveduth.

He said in the past there has been a problem with prostitutes, dumping and criminal elements in the area.

It was also pointed out that the placement of the tyres was temporary to prevent vehicles driving over the new plants, and they will be removed once the plants have grown.

Simon April, spokesman for Ray Nkonyeni Municipality confirmed that approval was obtained from Transnet, as that portion of the land belonged to it.

“We can also indicate that our Environmental Management Section will be looking at whether anti-environmental action has taken place,” said Mr April.

Councillor Doug Rawlins said he thought the cleared area made the intersection safer.

Mr Deveduth said all the residents in and around Oslo Beach were encouraged to become involved in this project and contribute generously. Contact him at 065 9356939.

Basil Lanka, the owner of Lazer911 Security, said another major project is the Oslo Beach Park, currently under management and upgrading by his company.

Mr Lanka encouraged residents to support the project to upgrade the park and to make it safe for families and children.

In total, they have spent R80 000 on various projects, including the upliftment of Hope Park in Marburg.
