WATCH: Port Shepstone business gutted in fire

The blaze started at around 2.30am.

A long-time South Coast business went up in flames in Port Shepstone during the early hours of this morning (Friday, 22nd).

The fire broke out at about 2.30am, damaging a section of Car Plates and Signs in Aiken Street.

The most badly affected area was the screening department at the back, which stored stock and safety signage.

Lazer 911 Security was first on the scene, responding to the activated alarm.

Personnel in Lazer 911’s control room contacted the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality’s fired department, which duly responded.

Security officers and RNM firemen teamed up to fight the fire and stopped it from spreading further.

The business has been on the coast since 1969, and is owned by McGovern brothers Terry and Kevin.

It has been at its current location since 1982.

Pauline McGovern said the screening department has been totally gutted.

“It’s a huge loss to the company. Fortunately, the front section of the business was saved by the firemen. At stage this we are not sure what caused the blaze. A lot of history has gone up in smoke,” she said.

The cause of the fire will be investigated by RNM fire department.
