“It started with Dr Chris van der Merwe, CEO and founder of Curro, completing a doctoral study which identified indicators of excellence in schools,” he explained.

He said the first Curro school was established in 1998 in Durbanville with a modest 300 pupils enrolled. “Today, we manage 164 schools, 68 campuses, 57, 276 pupils and 3,301 teachers. The company is on track to deliver 80 campuses to accommodate 90,000 pupils by 2020.”

Mr McMurtry believes that one can never underestimate the role that schools play in the lives of pupils, or indeed the country.
