Heavy rains predicted for South Coast .. and maybe some snow inland?

Communities surrounding rivers and streams should be on alert.

The South African Weather Service has warned of extreme weather throughout the country with major thunderstorms and heavy rains in KwaZulu-Natal.

A cold front made its fall in many parts of the Western Cape yesterday (Thursday).

A modest snowfall is making its way to South Africa this week, with KwaZulu-Natal and Lesotho set for a chilly weekend.

Snow Report South Africa (SRSA) have posted their first update in almost four months. SRSA still remains cautious over whether the snow will make landfall, but stated their data “shows enough stability” to publish an official forecast.

If you’re anywhere near the Drakensberg mountain range in KwaZulu-Natal, you may need to wrap up warm on Friday.

“Tonight over KZN coastal areas, especially south of Richards Bay, we do expect showers and rain to persist. This could also lead to localised flooding in areas of those municipalities,” forecaster, Wiseman Dlamini said.

The affected districts include Ugu, eThekwini, ILembe, and parts of King Cetshwayo.

Communities surrounding rivers, and streams should be on alert.

“There could be instances where the rain is heavy at times which could lead to localised flooding. Communities near those areas may be affected,” he said.

Motorists are advised to exercise caution, maintain a safe following distance and keep vehicle visibility at all times.
