Founder and owner of the home, Tharina Wessels has run the haven since 2014. It’s a full-time job with the elderly patients needing around the clock assistance.

Tracey who described Tharina as being very passionate about her cause said “The staff’s love, care and passion is astounding for those in their care. My role as Mrs South Africa Globe is to speak out for those who can’t. You can’t change the world but I can change where I am, and I am humbled to make a small difference.”

She said her passion lay in helping the community and that she was grateful and honoured to be able to spend time with people who have special needs. The pageant, she noted was not about the crown, but rather about having a platform from which to serve people.

Tracey, who lives in Rustenburg has a holiday home in Umzumbe, and that is how she became involved in her support of the home.

She said Palm Haven has many needs, such as adult nappies, as 70 percent of the residents are incontinent.

They also need two new washing machines, sponge mattresses, waterproof sheets, and a TV for frail care. Items must please be in good working order.

Towels that are still in good condition are also urgently required by the home.

Tracey urged people who can’t donate items to give of their time.
