Peter’s natural warmth, passion for puppetry and oratory skills had the audience enthralled. He shared the value puppets have in counselling with children, especially where they have been subjected to abuse and cannot verbalise their distress. “Through puppets,” he said “children feel empowered and eventually are able to share their feelings. Puppets have been used around the world in healing traumatised children, especially child victims of land mines.”

Peter demonstrated various types of puppets and spoke about their construction and operation. He operated a flying seagull, a mermaid, finger puppets, glove puppets and fascinated his guests by taking exactly one minute to make a puppet from a metre of material and six elastic bands.

He brought humour to his talk and demonstrated the Japanese puppetry art of Bankura, where three people combine to manipulate a small puppet which takes ten years to perfect.
