The campaign is endorsed by the Department of Basic Education and made possible by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
According to Nal’ibali’s public relations manager Siya Ngesi, RSS together with five other stations have signed up to broadcast children’s story time, interview literacy mentors, spread messages of events and offer tips for reading at home.
The other stations include, Nqubeko Community Radio, Alfred Nzo Community Radio, Sajonisi Youth Radio and The Voice of Matatiele.

The stories will be broadcast twice every weekday and a Saturday morning show will be held to discuss literacy tips for children.
“We see our role as amplifying the voices in our community because children are often the last to be heard. Offering programming that speaks to children, in languages they love and with content they’re excited about, builds our communities and our audiences,” said Mr Ngesi.

Nal’ibali has also made its mark locally through their ‘Story Powered Schools’ campaign whose main objective is to give children access to stories in their home language.
Launched in 2017 in schools within the Ugu, Maluti and Bizana districts the project has worked with over 720 schools in the past three years.
This year the project returns again to work with a new group of schools.
Managing director of Nal’ibali Jade Jacobsohn said community radio played a pivotal role in giving children access to stories especially in rural areas where resources are minimal.

“This partnership proves that story power comes from people power. With these stations on board, we will reach thousands more children, teachers and story lovers across the country. Improved literacy is linked to improved school performance and job opportunities, and we are excited to see how this story ends,” she said.
