Widenham woman scammed by ‘awning contractor’

If you have had dealings with this man, you are urged to contact the police.

A man purporting to be an awning contractor has made off with a R6 000 deposit paid to him by a 58-year-old Widenham resident.

The woman reported to police that she had paid the man, who drove a gold Mercedes Benz, the cash in order for him to purchase materials to complete an awning at her house.

It was agreed she would pay the balance of R3 500 once the job was completed.

“The man took the money and left. He has not returned, and nor has the job been done,” said Umkomaas Saps communications officer, Captain Ismail Shaik.

The man has also ignored the woman’s calls.

If you have had dealings with this man, you are urged to contact the police.

Station commander, Colonel QS Mabida said, “Do not pay deposits to people you have not verified or have done a brief background check on. There have been a number of people who have been scammed and ripped off in this manner.”
