Hibberdene Happenings: Hibberdene counts the cost
So much damage has been caused - roads left with deep craters, some completely impassable and others in no fit state to be driven on.
The heavens certainly opened up over the Easter weekend and the rainfall recorded on Monday and Tuesday must have been something of a record.

Retaining walls and roofs were severely damaged and many, your scribe included, spent time running round with buckets trying to contain the leaks.
The beach is covered in debris, plastic and sugar cane and is badly in need of a clean-up. Perhaps an idea to plan for some time in the future.
The access road to Leisuredene Village, Club Med, Grace Academy and Oodles Playschool was badly damaged and homes in Hibberdene River Resort, Mtwalume and Club Marina at Ifafa Beach also felt the effects of the flood.
The ‘Wall of Remembrance’ at the Methodist Church also suffered damage, but fortunately all the plaques were rescued and will be reinstated at a later date.
The sound of motorcycles echoed through town throughout the weekend, no doubt transporting their riders to the South Coast Bike Fest in Margate.
Church breakfast
Take along a friend or two and join in the Methodist men’s breakfast to be held at the church this Saturday, May 4 at 7am. Cost is only R20 per person, which guarantees you a wholesome and hearty breakfast as well as a time of fellowship. Winter camp
The Methodist churches on the lower South Coast will be holding their eighth winter camp at Oribi Bible Camp, near Oribi Gorge from July 4 to July 7.
Young people from grades 8 to 12 are invited to what promises to be another wonderful holiday, with good food, entertainment, fun-filled activities and a meaningful spiritual programme.
The leadership team is very experienced and the children will be in safe hands in a well-equipped and beautiful setting. Young people from all denominations are welcome and the cost is very reasonable. Contact Ken Walker at 082 379 0656 or the local church office at 039 699 2948 to register now.
Counselling
The Methodist Church is also planning to conduct a GriefShare course later this month. It is envisaged that it will be a three-month course with meetings taking place once a week. These courses are a huge help to anyone who has suffered a bereavement and anyone interested in attending should contact Debbie Fletcher at the church at 039 699 2948, Tuesday to Friday mornings.
Thoughts and prayers
Ruth Smith is not well and needs to be remembered in your thoughts and prayers. And please remember two residents of the Hibberdene River Resort who were injured during the floods – Basil Wahl who slipped in the mud and has hurt his knee and Ray Perks who suffered a broken collar bone when he also took a tumble.
On a happier note, Steve Coulson is making an excellent recovery from his broken ankle sustained six months ago and is now doing without the services of his wound care practitioner. What a relief.
Don’t forget to vote
Most importantly, please make an effort to cast your vote next Wednesday (8th). Don’t be apathetic and adopt a ‘couldn’t care’ less’ attitude. It is your duty to vote responsibly and with voting stations open the entire day, there is no excuse not to.
Celebrations
Birthday wishes go to Roger Burwood (5th) and Chris Snyman (7th) while anniversary wishes are extended to Marlene and Errol Koekemoer and Lorraine and Billy ‘the Skit’ Lawlor (3rd) and Doris and Richard Rodd and Erica and Helmut Fuchs (5th).
Those of you lucky enough to get today (Workers’ Day) off are wished a happy restful day, while the rest of us will press on regardless and rewardless.
