Port Shepstone Regional Hospital wears green to support Child Protection Week

During Child Protection Week hospital visitors, patients and staff will be encouraged to wear green ribbons, which symbolise their preparedness to fight against the scourge of child abuse.

National Child Protection Week is observed in South Africa annually to raise awareness of the rights of children as per the Children’s Act of 2005.

During Child Protection Week, which officially starts on Monday, May 27 to June 3, Port Shepstone Regional Hospital working in conjunction with the police, Family and Child Sexual Offences Unit and Lifeline will be hosting a child protection awareness campaign in order to promote the safety and well-being of children within the Ugu district.

In line with the theme for the campaign which says “Let Us Protect Our Children to Move South Africa Forward”, the task team will be sharing information to educate the public on what constitutes child abuse and the services available to deal with it. During Child Protection Week hospital visitors, patients and staff will be encouraged to wear green ribbons, which symbolise their preparedness to fight against the scourge of child abuse.

In addition a team of social workers from the hospital will visit Mbalencane Primary at Oshabeni to educate pupils about child abuse. There will also be a display highlighting the importance of childcare and safety issues which will be set up in the main foyer of the hospital.
