SOUTHBROOM
Congratulations to Southbroom BC’s Paul Ekermans, Vernon Clements (skip) and Dave Campbell on winning the Kingfisher Bowling Association’s men’s trips.
The finals were played at Port Shepstone CC last Sunday.
Vernon, who is completely deaf, and his second, Dave, worked on a signalling system to indicate information to one another about the bowls in play and which hand to play.
Dave was frequently seen knocking his fist onto his head to let Vernon know where a bowl was required.
Vernon played with his brand new size zero bowls which he has had for barely a week – a sharp drop on his previous size twos and before them, fives, as was the way when he commenced bowls more than 30 years ago.
Dave and Paul are both still novices, meaning that they have been registered players for fewer than three years, making their win even more special.
