Protester shot dead in Gcilima

A 35-year-old man has been arrested and is due to appear in court soon.

A protester (29) was shot and killed at Nkothaneni location in KwaXolo yesterday (Wednesday) at around 11am.

Margate police confirmed that there had been a public protest on the Gcilima road, with people blockading the road with poles.

“Two men in a private vehicle arrived at the blockade,” said police spokesman, Captain Nqobile Gwala. “They wanted to pass through but the protesters refused. It is claimed that one of the protesters attempted to take a firearm from one of the men in the vehicle, who then fired six shots at the protester.”

The man died at the scene.

A case of murder has been opened at the Margate police station and a 35-year-old man has been arrested.

He is due to appear at the Ramsgate Magistrate’s Court soon. It is believed the protest is regarding service delivery.
