Hibberdene Happenings: Flood-damaged roads cause havoc

Villagers are complaining that their pleas are falling on deaf ears.

YOUR scribe took a brief trip around Hibberdene to ascertain the state of flood-ravaged roads, about which many residents have been complaining about loudly. The access road to Leisuredene Village and Club Med appears to be one of the worst with practically half the road swallowed up by an enormous crater and villagers are complaining that their pleas are falling on deaf ears.

Equally bad is Miami Road and the fact that a motorist hasn’t yet come to grief remains a bit of a miracle. Residents are up in arms and urgently need something done about this dangerous state of affairs.

Outstanding turnout

Organiser Sue Paterson reports that last Saturday’s Mtwalume flea and craft market was an outstanding success, with sales being exceptional. Several stalls sold out completely and Sue described the market as a ‘fabulous day’s entertainment’. The weather was perfect and the music by Andy Els kept everyone’s feet tapping.

Popularity grows

Last Saturday’s Methodist men’s breakfast was also a great success, with attendance far in excess of  normal. The food was delicious and attendees were intrigued to listen to police officer Captain Theo Goldstone talk on Satanism-inspired crimes he investigated in the late 1990s.

Don Aldridge (left), Derek Gage (middle) and guest speaker Captain Theo Goldstone sit down to enjoy breakfast at last Saturday’s breakfast held at the Methodist Church. Captain Goldstone kept everyone riveted with tales of Satanist-inspired crimes and murder investigations.

The audience was spellbound as Capt Goldstone revealed shocking facts about murder cases investigated on the South Coast. The next breakfast will be held on Saturday, July 6.

Camp details

Spaces are filling up for the Oribi Youth Camp to be held at the Oribi Gorge from July 4 to 7. Contact Ken Walker at 082 3790656 or Debbie Fletcher at the church office at 039 6992948 should you wish to attend. The cost is very reasonable and teenagers of all denominations are most welcomed to attend. Several camps have been held in past years and all have proved to be very successful.

Don’t forget

Methodists are reminded of Reverend Martin Beukes’s final service in Hibberdene on Sunday, June 16. It will be held at 2pm instead of the customary 8.30am and all congregants are urged to attend to bid farewell to Martin and his wife Nicole before their move to the United Kingdom. Please take this opportunity to say goodbye to the pastoral couple before their departure.

Be aware

There seems to be an influx of so-called ‘car guards’ in town again. Without the support of Gladiator Security, which regularly keeps an eye on the ‘wannabe’ guards, the town would probably be overrun.

Happy celebrations

Muslim readers and businesses are wished well for Eid Mubarak – may your celebrations be joyous and fulfilling.

Take note

There will be no neighbourhood news next week as your scribe will not be available.
