Tragedy struck last Tuesday, June 4 when a bakkie drove into Mthokos Tuckshop in Roseville Informal Settlement, pinning a three-year-old child against a wall.
According to Scottburgh Saps communications officer, Captain Adam Francis the 22-year-old mother and her child were at the tuckshop window when the bakkie ploughed into them.
“The child was rushed to Umzinto Clinic, but died from his injuries,” said Captain Francis.
His mother was unharmed.

The 19-year-old driver fled once he realised what had happened, but was apprehended by members of the community before the arrival of
Sergeants Reginald Maphumulo and Mondli Gumede of the Umzinto Saps.
He is being charged with culpable homicide, reckless and negligent driving, driving a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s licence and failing to ascertain the nature of injuries after an accident and has made his first appearance in the Umzinto Magistrate’s Court.
The accused remains in custody and will reappear on June 13 for his formal bail application.
The case is being investigated by Detective Constable Sthembiso Gumede of Umzinto Saps.
