South Coast to Scotland: Krummeck’s Dundee2Dundee dream now a reality
The adventurous couple has been an inspiration to many.
Kevin and Donna Krummeck added some South African flair when they steered their trusty Land Rover Defender into the streets of Dundee in Scotland earlier today.
It was a cause for celebration as they had completed an epic voyage all the way from the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal.
Donna was born in Dundee, Scotland while Kevin was born in Dundee in Northern KwaZulu-Natal.
As a couple, they enjoy challenges and trying new things. Why not drive from Dundee to Dundee?
Most of their friends and family wished them well, secretly probably thinking they were ‘a bit crazy’.
The Krummecks live at San Lameer, home to one of the most beautiful golf courses in the country.
They are now in the home of golf territory, with St Andrew’s just around the corner. Not that a round of golf is in the plans.
Along the way, they’ve raised funds for Give a Child a Family in Margate, an organisation that – in short – seeks to place children in families, or reunite them with their families.
So far, Kevin and Donna have had some great times, but have also enjoyed staying in touch with friends and family back home who have tracked their journey each day, and at times, felt like they’ve been there in the Landy with them.
They took the route up along the eastern side of the continent, through Mozambique, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt.
In terms of food and cooking they had a braai, usually once a day, after starting the day with coffee and a rusk.
They snacked on biltong or leftovers from the day before.
Their mobile kitchen enabled them to stop along the way and make a ‘cuppa’ or a cheese roll, or something similar.
But when they reached central and northern Africa, the braaing got a bit more difficult and they resorted more to gas cooking.
In Egypt there was virtually no camping and they had to stay in hotels and eat in restaurants.
They spent a part of the journey in Turkey before starting the European leg of the journey.
At times it was a waiting game, as they had to organise the Defender across by boat from Egypt and were in Alexandria in a hotel (spoilt!) for five days and, then once it went through customs, they flew to Istanbul and had to wait a week for the ship to bring their vehicle.
So, they spent some time sightseeing in Istanbul, one of their favourite cities.
But they were eager to get back on the road, with Dundee in their sights.
On the way, they travelled through Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, Hungary, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, France, England and up to Scotland.
“We miss home especially our family and children and granddaughter but with modern tech, we manage to get some video calls in and chat as much as possible,” said Kevin.
“We also miss our business The Village Tavern and our ‘Tavern’ family who are keeping the home fires burning, allowing us us to do what we’re doing.”
Despite their fantastic experiences in the different countries visited, he and Donna have missed South Africa and the South Coast.
“When we travel, it makes us realise just what we have and take for granted in SA and particularly the South Coast, and what a gem we have and what a privilege it is to live on the coast. Both Donna and I would not live in any other place in the world and we have travelled extensively.”
Hopefully, the new friends they make in Scotland won’t be trying to twist their arms to stay.
