Hibberdene Happenings: Congregation bids farewell to Rev Wright

He held the fort for about 18 months three years ago, when the church was without a resident preacher.

The Methodist congregation experienced another sad day last Sunday when they had to bid farewell to Reverend Alan Wright, who will be leaving his home in Umtentweni to be closer to his family in Pietermaritzburg.

In his capacity of retired minister, Rev Wright held the fort for about 18 months three years ago, when the church was without a resident preacher and he and his wife Lesley endeared themselves to all and sundry. He will be deeply missed and is wished well in his new home.

And, in happier news, Umkomaas Methodist Church commemorated its centenary on July 6 – an amazing milestone. The church is heartily congratulated on this achievement under the leadership of Rev Cedric Pretorius, formerly of Hibberdene.

To market

Remember the Mtwalume flea and craft market next to the pool at Koelwaters Resort on Saturday, July 27, at 9am. This market has grown in leaps and bounds and gets a little bigger every time it’s held. Long may its success continue.

Tables are free of charge, so contact Sue Paterson at 039 9724125 or 082 4002616. And if you know of an orphanage or baby home in the area for which Sue can direct her Christmas Cheer programme, please give her a ring.

Last Saturday’s Methodist men’s breakfast saw guest speaker Derek Gage give a very interesting talk about his life experiences. The next breakfast will be on August 3.

Final show

Scottburgh’s 10th annual Classic Car Show took place last Sunday and the icy cold wind did nothing to dampen the spirit of the crowds attending. Some of the cars on show were really spectacular and the food and drinks were plentiful.

It appears that this was the final car show, but hopefully someone will take over the event organising from the legendary Peter Fielding.

Sad tidings

Many will remember Alan and Sue Abraham, who relocated to Gauteng only a few months ago. Sadly, Alan died last Monday after a sudden, unexpected illness. Deepest sympathy is extended to Sue and family as they mourn his death.

Likewise, condolences go to the family of Tersia Holmes, who died last weekend. She will be fondly remembered by many.

Rose Howse suffered a nasty fall over the weekend and has been hospitalised with injured ribs. She is wished a speedy recovery. Colds and flu are rife at present and most people seem to be affected to some or other degree. All are wished better health soon.

Birthday wishes for the week go to Norman Aiston (10th), Elize Gomez (11th) and Amanda Vermeulen, Don Aldridge, Clive Fisher and Steve Coulson (16th), while your scribe has no anniversaries on record.

Don’t forget to keep Lizzie busy with Hibberdene news and snippets.
