There, the top achievers from each region move forward to represent their province.
The regional event took place at the Parasakthi Temple hall in Merebank last Saturday.
Twenty-five students from the Sa Re Ga Ma Music Music Academy entered the language, music, singing and dance categories.
It was the first time these students had competed, and they did Port Shepstone proud.
Music guru, Vernon Govender said, “I am really proud of their achievements thus far, and for all they have done to promote our rich culture and language. I must thank the parents of these students for having faith and belief in me, and for entrusting their children to my care.”
The Sheppie contingent scooped first place for choir and orchestra and non-devotional film song and song duet; second for Bhajan, sacred song, harmonium solo, golden oldies and prose and third for Subramani Bharathiar and modern dance.
“All the students enjoyed the experience and learnt from other musicians. The fact that they earned a place in the provincial finals on their debut speaks volumes about their hard work, passion and dedication. They have set a high standard for others to follow,” said Mr Govender.
