Mandela Day: Support Bursaries for Change
The Nelson Mandela Foundation is proud to support the initiative.
The University of KwaZulu-Natal Foundation is launching its second annual Mandela Day Bursaries for Change campaign. In its first year, the campaign raised R364 000 which was used to provide partial bursaries for ten financially and academically deserving students in the “missing middle”. The missing middle refers to students who don’t qualify for national bursaries and who can’t afford to pay for fees using family resources.

The Foundation attracted the bulk of its donations through the power of radio. Listeners in KZN were encouraged to support this worthy initiative. More than four hundred radio listeners participated and helped raise R100’000 in one day on donations based crowdfunding platform, BackaBuddy.
This year in order to be heard by a wider audience the campaign will be broadcast on Durban Youth Radio 101.5 on the 19th July and on Gagasi FM on the 26th July 2019. Donors to this campaign will be entered in a lucky draw where they could win one of the following: a weekend in Cape Town sponsored by Serendipity Travel, designer sunglasses sponsored by Execuspecs and Specsavers Gateway, a Lindt chocolate hamper and twenty sets of two movie tickets sponsored by Cinecentre.
In 2018 the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry used its member network to spread the message far and wide to garner support for the campaign. The chamber has already mobilised its member network to make a difference and change the life of a student in 2019.
The Nelson Mandela Foundation has also thrown its support behind what they see as a sustainable Mandela Day initiative.
“The Nelson Mandela Foundation is proud to support the UKZN Bursaries for Change initiative. This Mandela Day campaign is key in providing opportunities to students and youth who have the ambition to make a change in their own lives and those of their families. We encourage everyone to get involved and support this initiative” Yase Godlo – Director Mandela Day and Special Projects.
A number of corporates are championing this cause amongst their staff, suppliers and clients. The CEO’s of Serendipity Travel, Business Sense and Travel With Flair are running their own mini campaigns in order to contribute to the overall campaign. You are encouraged to make a donation of R67 or more by going to donations based crowdfunding platform, BackaBuddy:
