Margate beach gets ‘Mandela Day’ spruce-up

Margate Sands Beach Hotel took on this initiative as part of their 67 minutes for Mandela Day.

Clean-up operations continue to take place along some of South Coast beaches after recent devastating floods left them littered with debris.

Earlier this week, Margate Sands Beach Hotel management, staff and some guests took the time to spruce up Margate beach by removing debris.

General manager, Leonard Gomo said the clean-up is aimed at galvanising communities to take part in the protection of the environment, cleaning up and greening their neighbourhoods.

“It’s important for communities and businesses to play a role in caring for the environment to create sustainable tourism and an ecological footprint,” he said.

He added that they took on this initiative as part of their 67 minutes for Mandela Day.

A team effort from the staff of Project X and Margate Sands Beach Resort during the beach clean-up.

“We want to remind everyone to go out there and do their bit for Mandela Day, so we thought we would kick-start the initiative with the clean-up today before Mandela day fever kicks off,” he said.

David Van Zyl of Project X also brought in his staff to be part of the clean-up campaign.

“When I was told about this, I quickly chipped in because it’s community work and that’s what we do,” said Mr Van Zyl.

Corey Wernick of Margate Business Association said the clean-up was much needed as holidaymakers were starting to complain about the state of the beach.

Nomusa Mbili (left) and Gugu Nqoko played their part in the clean-up.

“A big thank you for this great initiative by the resort,” he said.

Ms Wernick also said they have coordinated with the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality to bring in trucks and excavation equipment to expose the rubble underneath so it could be collected.

The clean-up will take place from 8.30am on Tuesday next week.
