Fast fix from Ugu at Lucien beach

A mechanical failure resulted in sewage flowing onto the beach.

A sewage spill at Lucien beach, Manaba on Thursday morning last week has been blamed on mechanical failure.

According to Ugu District Municipal spokesman, France Zama the problem occurred at the Margate Waste Water Treatment Works.

“The failure caused the pump to burn, which in turn caused the clarifier to carry over into the final effluent. Environmental health practitioners were sent to investigate and confirmed the discharge.

“However, there were no noticeable solids in the final effluent and no offensive odour present.”

As a precautionary measure, a sign prohibiting the use of the beach for recreational purposes was erected.

“The water and sanitation team worked around the clock to repair the pump and the beach was re-opened on Friday afternoon,” said Mr Zama.
