Water crisis strikes again

The current outage is a result of pump failure at Nsimbini pump station in Bhobhoyi, says Ugu.

Those living in the Nyandezulu and Betania areas have spent the last 10 days without water.

Anger and frustration are mounting, and strike action is now being threatened.

Fundiswa Mzobe, who lives in Bhomela, has had no water for the past eight days and says not only is it difficult to run a household but the lack of water poses a serious health threat.

“Having a sick child with no water in the house is very frustrating. It’s also a struggle to bath in the mornings and go to work.”

According to Ms Mzobe, a water tanker promised for Tuesday arrived only at 9.20pm.

Nosipho Ndwalane, who works at a nearby farm, said the water crisis was affecting their livelihoods and income.

She recalls that three months ago, the community had protested over the same issues and Ugu had promised a resolution.

“Protesting is the only language Ugu understands. Maybe if the community protests we will get our water back,”said the irate mother of three.

Ugu spokesman France Zama said the current water interruptions experienced in Bomela, Nyandezulu and parts of Betania were a result of pump failure at Nsimbini pump station in Bhobhoyi which occurred on July 11.

“Ugu is busy with the procurement of a new pump and repairs to the two damaged pumps. Work is expected to be complete by July 27, while the water supply is expected to be restored by July 29.”

Due to a shortage of water tankers, relief has been scheduled in the affected areas every second day, Mr Zama added.
