Honours student has Gamalakhe (and netball) at heart

The first phase of the project is complete and will be unveiled tomorrow (21st).

SIMPHIWE Ntozakhe (21), originally of Gamalakhe, but now living in Margate, is an honours student at the University of Johannesburg.

She is studying a BA degree and doing her honours in strategic marketing communications.

As part of this, she needs to implement a community based project.

“The intention is to make a change that is sustainable. For this project I chose the community of Gamalakhe,” she said.

The project will be focusing on developing interest in sports, especially netball.

This was a sport she enjoyed when she attended Port Shepstone High School.

Nowadays she plays socially, when she gets the chance.

“This is intended for the youth already in the area, as well as those interested in being trained in the sport,” she said.

Simphiwe felt that empowering such youth and creating upliftment through sport would have a positive impact in the development of the community.

The initial step of the project involved the reinstatement of the conditions of the netball courts at the Kendel Sport’s Grounds, it being the sports ground of choice for this project.

“Upon sourcing of sponsorship from local business people, we are currently successfully reinstating the courts, mainly repainting the courts and poles as well as reinstalling the pole nets, that were damaged,” she said.

Grass cutting and picking of the scattered rubbish was facilitated by the ward councillor and local volunteers as part of Mandela Day 67 minutes initiative.

An event to launch this ongoing project will be held at the grounds this Sunday, July 21.

It will be held in collaboration with the Department of Sports and Recreation, who will be facilitators of the event.
