Shafts saddle up for veggie derby

Members designed, built and raced their very own vegetable 'donkeys'.

We all know the old saying “Don’t play with your veggies, eat them” but at the recent Self-Help Association for the Seniors (Shafts) meeting there was an exception to the rule.

Members designed, built and raced their very own vegetable ‘donkeys’ for the chance of winning a prize at the association’s annual vegetable derby held at the Shelly Beach Ski-boat Club last Thursday.

The rules were simple, each donkey had to be made entirely from any combination of vegetables held together with either toothpicks or whatever other brilliant engineering ideas the Shaft members had.

Punters placed their bets on the donkeys namely, Do it again, Spud VI, Jessie, Galloping Gertie, Dover, Soup Greens, Midget and Goliath.

Chairman Stewart Booth said, as usual, the members had lots of fun. “Our association is certainty growing and I am very proud to be connected with the Shafts, Shelly Beach,” he said.

Next month’s Shafts meeting is a tuna braai at the Shelly Beach Ski-boat Club on August 15th.

The association also hosts a braai on the last Sunday of every month at the Uvongo Tennis Club. For details phone Stewart Booth at 039 6951609.
