Port Shepstone Regional Hospital pays healthful visit to Marsec
Some 217 pupils were assessed for hypertension and diabetes.
Port Shepstone Regional Hospital held a wellness campaign at Marburg Secondary last Wednesday.
The staff from the hospital’s medical department spent some time with grade 10 pupils talking about chronic diseases, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, substance abuse and suicide. The hospital’s dieticians, a social worker and the eye clinic team also provided their services.

Dr Omar Habib, a specialist in psychiatry, delivered a talk on suicide and reminded pupils of the importance of choosing good friends. Social worker, Nozuko Madolo, addressed the issues of substance abuse, detoxing and rehabilitation. Pupils were engrossed by the talks and enjoyed the exercise session led by the hospital’s taebo team afterwards.
Some 217 pupils were assessed for hypertension and diabetes, six pupils were referred to a doctor for high blood pressure, 114 were screened for tuberculosis, 74 had their eyes tested, five were counselled on diet and healthy lifestyle and 84 were screened for mental health.
“A number of these students had major issues and were thus referred to the psychiatric clinic at the hospital. They expressed their gratitude for the wellness campaign, stating that it was an opportunity for illnesses and unhealthy habits to be identified at an early age and treated accordingly,” said hospital spokesman, Phumza Morai.
Port Shepstone Hospital team thanks the school management for permitting the wellness campaign and pupils for their willingness to seek help and advice from the team.
