Umtamvuna Views: Beached seal clubbed to death

All attempts to get camera footage or witnesses willing to aid in an investigation were unsuccessful.

TWO weeks ago a large Cape fur seal came ashore near Port Edward, relaxed on the beach for a few hours and then lumbered back into the ocean. It was presumed it had overeaten on plentiful fish following the annual sardine run.

The next day, the same big seal again beached itself at Aunty’s Bay in Glenmore. Sadly he was set upon by four men who clubbed him to death, wrapped it in a blanket and hastily left the scene.

The seal may have been sick or just resting after feeding, but we will never know. All attempts to get camera footage or witnesses willing to aid in an investigation were unsuccessful.

Walk in nature

The next bi-monthly Shoreline Walk will take place from TO Strand to Red Desert (Port Edward) this coming Sunday, August 4. Walks start at 7.30am and the donation fee is R20.

The last one will be from Wild Coast Sun Hotel and Casino Resort to Mzamba on August 18. All money goes towards wildlife projects and Honorary Officers hope to have good support on the last two WIN (walking in nature) walks. The distance is about 5km and there is no pressure or finishing time.

Trafalgar Garden Club members Megan Anderson (left) and Anne Kinghorn (middle) enjoyed rambling around hostess Liz Norton’s beautiful, interesting garden in Southbroom.

Interesting outing

Trafalgar Garden Club held its monthly meeting at the Southbroom home of Liz and Grey Norton. Members rambled around the expansive garden which boasts mostly water-wise succulents and aloes. The different plants, varying in size, colour and texture, were planted in blocks which has a striking effect.

Rolling lawns between manicured beds are interspersed with large outcrops of natural flat rocks, dotted with little green patches of hardy succulents growing in small rock indents. Unfortunately, club president Merle Strachan suffered a fall earlier in the day and broke her arm. She underwent surgery and is now recovering at home.
