Umtamvuna Views: Novices get the balls rolling at fun bowls day

The club hopes that some of the beginners will take the sport further.

IT APPEARS that water in general is ‘on strike’. The intermittent Ugu water supply continues to leave households high and dry. And where is the rain?

Normally by August there are at least a few showers to keep gardens alive, but, so far there’s been nothing at all.

Annual fun day

On a lighter note, Port Edward Bowling Club held its annual fun day for 53 non-bowlers last Saturday. The beginners converged on the club, ready for a laugh and to generally have fun.

A number of experienced players were on hand to give advice and the ‘motley crew’ did their best to keep bowls out of the gutter. Teams of four comprised a collection of farmers, fishermen, Kokstad residents and oddballs.

In the spirit of fun, some dressed up for the day and the title for best-dressed went to ‘golden girls’ Beryl, Theresa and Louise Brereton and Charlie Miller.

Deon Wicks from Kokstad kindly donated a sheep for the braai afterwards. The club hopes that some of the beginners will take the sport further and thanks all for taking part in this social fund-raiser.

Out and about

The annual ‘Art by the Sea’ exhibition which opened officially at Margate Museum last Thursday attracted a good audience.

There were some very interesting pieces displayed, including a selection of work of Southcity Christian School pupils. The exhibition will be on for a few weeks so pop in to see some amazing local talent.

Local ‘tree walkers’ were invited to visit the Port Edward farm of Barry and Norma Payn recently. The farm produces bananas and macadamias as well as asparagus, paw-paws and pecan nuts.

The dozen amateur botanists thoroughly enjoyed stomping a path through the dense indigenous forest and identifying a number of interesting trees – a lovely excursion.
