Layla (18), who is also the granddaughter of locals Jo and Joanne Venter, has been working at a restaurant for three years on a volunteer basis in the hopes of gaining quality experience in the industry.

“She entered a competition run by the Capsicum Culinary School and sent in a picture of a burger she had made,” said Joanne.

On the strength of this photo, Layla made it through to the semi-finals, securing herself a R90 000 bursary.

Should she win the final at the end of August, she will receive a three-year bursary.
