According to information received, the policeman opened fire on the men who then fled in a vehicle which had been stolen in the Tongaat area the previous night.
“Police officers spotted a vehicle fitting the description and attempted to pull the vehicle over,” said provincial Saps communications officer, Captain Nqobile Gwala.
The men accelerated and a chase ensued on the N2 northbound towards Amanzimtoti.
A shootout between police and the suspects resulted in the driver of the stolen vehicle losing control.
The vehicle left the road and rammed into a tree.
Police instructed the occupants of the vehicle to alight, but the suspects opened fire on officers.
The suspects then fled on foot and despite the joint efforts of Umkomaas police and the Umzinto K9 Unit, could not be traced.
They were apparently last seen boarding a taxi.
A variety of housebreaking implements, the vehicle (with false registration plates), a cellphone, two large knives, a firearm and five rounds of ammunition were seized by police.
