Answers sought in Amandawe

Several concerns have been raised by a resident.

AN Amandawe resident feels his community is being neglected by authorities.

The man, who wishes to remain anonymous as he fears for his family’s safety, said the area had had no running water for about two weeks.

“People had to walk all the way to the highway to fill buckets and this is very dangerous,” he said.

“Children run across the road to get water and we worry about them.”

Although the man said water supply had been partially restored, the amount of water flowing from taps was, he said, insufficient.

Another concern he raised was the Amandawe rural housing project, construction on which begun last year.

He claimed that some houses are without roofs and others are still just ‘slabs’.

Umdoni Municipality was contacted for comment.

“The contractors are working on a recovery plan with 25 priority houses being completed by an existing contractor and a new contractor appointed to complete 100 units, which are at wall plate level, over the next four months,” replied communications manager, Sphelele Cele.

Potholes and damaged roads, especially in Ward 17, were also a problem, said the man.

“There is inadequate maintenance – many of the roads are fixed temporarily when they need something permanent done.”

In response, Ms Cele said, “The municipality has an ongoing road maintenance plan that ensures the maintenance of rural roads on a continuous basis. Roads that are in a bad state must be brought to the attention of the municipality through ward councillors and will be included in the maintenance plan.”

“We appreciate all the help we get from our councillors, but we do understand that they don’t have the power to do more for us,” he said.
