Medic Gene gains his wings

Mr Smith's youngest daughter, Kaydee Osner said that as a family they understood that saving lives always came first for him, this was what he lived for.

Former Port Shepstone Protection Services officer, Gene Smith (55) died of cancer on Monday this week.

The late Mr Smith worked as a medic and firefighter for many years in KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and Iraq.

His daughter Charlene van Wijk said that one of her father’s favourite things was being a flight medic so much so that he applied to complete his pilot licence. My dad loved to fly!

“He was a medic for 35 years. Saving other people’s lives was always his main priority, it was his passion,” she said.

Mr Smith’s youngest daughter, Kaydee Osner said that as a family they understood that saving lives always came first for him, this was what he lived for.

“My father always wanted to be a medic, he got to live his dream. He has now gained his wings,” she said.
