Hibberdene Happenings: Spring Fair gets a makeover

It will now take the form of a one-day jumble/car boot sale on October 5.

UNFORTUNATELY a lack of interest from previous years’ stallholders and the general public has forced organisers to cancel the Spring Fair, scheduled for September 27 and 27. All is not lost however, as it will now take the form of a one-day jumble/car boot sale on October 5, from early in the morning.

Tables can be hired at R20 each from Marie at 082 2935757. Please support this venture, as once again, all profits go to charitable organisations.

Take note

The next eye clinic will take place on Wednesday, September 18, from noon onwards and bookings may be made with your scribe at either the supplied number or 073 1653961. After this month, there are only another two clinics left for the year, so book timeously if you would like to have your new spectacles before the festive season.

All roads will lead to Mtwalume this Saturday, September 7, when another of the popular craft/flea markets will take place from 9am onwards. The venue is the grassy area adjoining the pool at Koelwaters Resort and the market will follow its usual format, with something for everybody.

Make sure you pop in for a visit and catch Andy Els with his special brand of music while you browse the stalls. As usual, tables will be supplied free of charge. Contact Sue Paterson at either 039 9721425 or 082 4002616.

On the same day, the Methodist men’s breakfast takes place from 7am. Fellowship, food and fun will prevail and for only R30 per person, you will be treated to a mouth-watering meal and a thought-provoking address.

All men are most welcome to attend and to bring a friend or two along.

Contact Debbie at 039 6992948 or Louis at 039 6992610 before tomorrow (September 5) to facilitate catering. The church held one of its jumbo jumble sales last Saturday, but profits from the sale had not been announced at the time of writing. It will be reported on at a later date.

Sad tidings

It was with shock that the community learnt of the death of Jennie Potgieter last weekend after a short stay in hospital. She will be lovingly remembered by her many friends. Sympathy goes out to her husband Johnny ‘Pottie’ and her children and relatives. Jennie was remembered at a service at the Methodist Church last Friday, August 30.

An unfortunate incident occurred on the main road through Hibberdene last Thursday afternoon when a pedestrian was knocked down whilst attempting to cross the road just north of the traffic lights. He was critically injured and subsequently died from his injuries. Sincere condolences to his next of kin.

Your scribe’s granddaughter Shannon Coulson leaves her home in Witbank this Thursday (tomorrow) and will fly off to Bristol, UK, where she will attend Bristol University for the next few years to study product design. She will be accompanied by mom and dad Wanda and Greg, who will spend about two weeks getting Shannon settled in before returning to SA.

Cause for celebration

Four couples celebrate notable anniversaries. Lee and Brian Balfour were married for 40 years on August 28 and spent last Sunday celebrating with a lovely lunch at Port Shepstone Country Club, accompanied by their son Ryan, his wife Tarryn, and grandchildren Rylie and Tyler, from Ballito. They are heartily congratulated, as are Carol and Cliff le Roux (61 years on September 6), Irene and Len Marshall (57 years on the 8th) and Linda and Tom Kent (53 years on the 10th).

Birthday wishes go to Sandra Smith-Enticott and Douwlina van Wyk (August 28), Louise Snyman (30th), Bessie Buys, Irene Enkerwitz, Funiwe McRery and Colleen Gillham (31st), Naureen van der Merwe (September 1), Rina Winterboer (4th), Hetta Lubbe, Gloria van der Watt and Annette Lessing (5th), Greer Henderson (7th) and Erick Mack and Tinus Sassenberg (10th).

Remember to keep Lizzie busy with all things Hibberdene.
