Sheppie Snippets: Hindus to observe important prayers

Many of the temples on the South Coast will observe the following prayers.

Hindus throughout the world will be observing a month-long fast for Purtassi from Tuesday, September 17. The Maha Vishnu temple will be holding their annual Raam Bhajan prayer on Saturday, September 21. The day starts with the temple chariot visiting surrounding areas of Port Shepstone. Hawan is at 1pm followed by the Purtassi prayer at 3pm.

Supper will be served from 5:30pm with the Raam Bhajan prayer starting from 7pm. The temple is running a raffle where the first prize is a flat-screen TV.

The second prize is a microwave oven and there is a mystery third prize. Tickets are R10 and can be bought from members of the temple. The winner will be drawn during the Raam Bhajan. For more information contact Reggie Chetty at 076 1307591 or Sagie Arjoon at 078 6596116.

Navaratri

The Hibiscus Coast Navaratri Committee will once again be celebrating Navaratri 2019 at the Arya Samaj Hall from September 29 to October 7. Shastriji Ramshusheel Chaturvedi of Mumbai will be officiating the prayer. Daily recitations of the full 13 chapters of the Durga Saptashati together with the Maha Yajna will commence at 6pm daily and 2:30pm on weekends. Pachra and Kirtans will be performed by Vickesh Moonilal on Saturday, October 5. On Sunday, October 6, a Sampoornam Ramayan musical by Rabi Rampersad will start at 1pm, thereafter the Maha Yajna and Kanya Pooja will be performed. On Monday, October 7, Saraswati Pooja will be observed, and students are encouraged to bring in their books for blessings, thereafter the Sahastra Archana (offering of 108 roses to Mother Durga) will be performed, where devotees will have an opportunity to offer a rose to Mata Di. On Tuesday, October 8, the committee invites you to bid farewell to Mata Di, between 10.30am to 11.30am at The Block, Port Shepstone. The procession to The Block will leave the Port Shepstone Arya Samaj Hall at 10am, followed by a Visarjan where Mata Di will be immersed into the depths of the ocean at 12pm. Prasad and supper will be served daily, and lunch will be served at the Visarjan. The committee has 2020 religious calendars for sale which can be purchased from committee members. Prayer

The Shree Raam Narayan Mandir in Marburg will observe Pithar Paksha from this Saturday, September 14. Navaratri will be observed from September 29 to October 7. Prayers will be held daily at 6pm. Officiating priest will be Pundit Misra. The prayer will be concluded on October 8, with Vijay Dashmi from 10am to 12pm. For further information contact Singh Samsunder at 083 3008382.

Women’s gathering

Gender-based violence is one of the most devastating social challenges facing South Africa and its democracy at present.

Three South Coast women are making a stand against women and child abuse, and holding a women’s gathering ‘Bent but not Broken’ at the Norwegian Settlers Church next Friday, September 13, at 6.30pm and Saturday, September 14, at 5.30pm.

Fishing

The annual Maistry Rock and Surf fishing competition take place next, Saturday, September 21. Two of the designated fishing areas are the Sandspit and Margate pier. Starting time from 6am. There are great prizes to be won with special prizes and gift hampers for women and scholar anglers. Entry fee is R50 per person. Weigh-in and prize giving will be at the Action Sports Bar, Marburg at 2.30pm. Tickets are on sale at Lucky’s Sports Port Shepstone and Manaba. Church crusade

Solid Rock Global Ministries under the leadership of Evangelist Timothy and Rhona van der Byl invite all to their first crusade to be held at the GP Business Park, Deepvale Road, Umbango from Wednesday, September 25 to September 29. Pastor Timothy van der Byl together with Pastor Gareth van der Byl and Evangelist Stephen Marescia will be speaking at the event. On Friday, September 27, a special youth service will be held.
