Three ANC members die in accident

ANC Lower South Coast Region spokesman Lindo Mzimela said the ANC expressed its heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of all three men.

Three Umzumbe region ANC members were killed in a head-on collision between a minibus taxi and an SUV on the Old St Faith’s Road last Friday night.

Twelve other people suffered serious injury.

The driver of the taxi, Lindelani Mchunu (39) and two occupants from the SUV, Thabani Luthuli (38) and Siphamandla Madlala (28) all died at the scene.

Mr Luthuli, popularly known as Oscar, was a ward 5 councillor while Mr Madlala and Mr Mchunu were ward 5 branch members.

It is believed Mr Luthuli and Mr Madlala had been travelling to Port Shepstone, while Mr Mchunu had been travelling towards Oshabeni from Port Shepstone.

Family, friends and colleagues all expressed their shock at the deaths.

Mr Mchunu’s family said they were still struggling to come to terms with the loss.

His sister, Philisiwe Mchunu, said the father of two young boys aged 11 and seven, would be sorely missed by the family.

“It’s sad, especially because not so long ago we laid our father to rest, and now it’s our older brother.”

Mr Mchunu’s memorial service takes place at his Oshabeni home today (Thursday), at 10am.

The funeral will be at his home this Sunday, September 15, at 9am.

Umzumbe Municipality spokesman, Sabelo Ncwane said the municipality had been deeply saddened by the news.

“Councillors are the first point of service delivery for our communities and it becomes even more painful when we lose people who are in contact with our communities on a daily basis.

“We send our sincere condolences to the family, friends and comrades and wish them strength in this difficult time,” he said.

ANC Lower South Coast Region spokesman Lindo Mzimela said the ANC expressed its heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of all three men.

He added that Mr Luthuli was a former regional deputy secretary of the ANCYL and had served as ward councillor since the 2016 local government elections.

Mr Luthuli’s memorial service will be held at Frankland Hall today (Thursday) at noon while both his and Mr Madlala’s funerals will take place at Malusi High School in Oshabeni this Saturday (September 14) at 10am.

SAPS spokesman Captain Petros Mpinge confirmed that a case of culpable homicide was being investigated.
