Hibberdene Happenings: Bad weather dampens outdoor events

The church's men's breakfast was not too well attended, but those who did attend, found it both interesting and informative.

WIND, drizzle, rain and the cold played havoc with outdoor activities over the past couple of weeks, but most went ahead nevertheless.

Mtwalume’s flea and craft market went ahead as planned last Saturday, with attendance being only slightly down than on normal market days. Three new stallholders joined the line-up and will no doubt make their presence felt in future markets as well.

The Methodist Church’s giant jumble sale on Saturday, August 31, also went off well, again in spite of the weather, which resulted in drizzle and cloudy weather for most of the morning. An amount of R5 000 was raised by selling second-hand clothes, bric-a-brac, books and household and kitchen goods.

Macadamia nut farmer Alan Ardé delivered a fascinating talk at last Saturday’s men’s breakfast held at the Methodist Church.

The church’s men’s breakfast held last Saturday was not too well attended, but those who did attend, found it both interesting and informative. Speaker Alan Ardé, a prominent macadamia nut farmer in the district, gave a talk on methods used in the industry. The next breakfast takes place on October 5.

Planning ahead

Wednesday morning ‘chair exercises’ run by Jill Bylett is going strong at the church and is open to both women and men. New members are encouraged to join in. The exercises are not too strenuous and are ideal for those not too young and nimble.

Plans for the giant jumble/car boot sale are going ahead as planned. Scheduled for Saturday, October 5, from about 9am, tables can be hired at R20 each by booking with Marie at 082 2935757. Book a table as soon as possible to be part of this event.

Special treat

Members of Hibiscus Quilters’ Guild had the pleasure of making 23 ‘vroetel’ (‘fiddle’) quilts for residents of Palm Haven Alzheimer’s Retreat in Woodgrange. The haven is a care centre specifically for Alzheimer’s patients who can no longer care for themselves.

The centre has recently relocated from Umzumbe and celebrates its 29th birthday this year.

Representatives Margi Anderson (chairman) and Wendy Sander delivered the quilts on behalf of the guild and residents were delighted. Many were seen to be playing with the bits and pieces attached to the lap quilts, which are designed and stitched to keep hands busy. For further information about the Quilters’ Guild please or the quilts, contact Margi at 083 4095094 or 039 3151767.
