Sea Park residents in a rage over road

Due to the poor condition of the road, even one of the municipality's trucks got stuck in a ditch.

The residents of First Avenue in Sea Park are fed up and frustrated with the poor condition of the road, especially after the heavy rains experienced on the South Coast. Outraged residents say enough is enough and it’s high time the municipality takes action and tar the road.

When the Herald visited the area on Tuesday last week, Ray Nkonyeni Municipality’s Technical Services (roads) were seen attending to the road.

However, due to the poor condition of the road, even one of the municipality’s trucks got stuck in a ditch.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality’s spokesman, Simon April said First Avenue is not part of the capital budget for the 2019/20 financial year and therefore falls within those that are categorised as part of routine or periodic maintenance.

“Repairs and maintenance of roads are an ongoing programme. For the road to be tarred, it has to be part of the capital projects which are taken from the Integrated Development Plan (IDP). Councillors and even ward committee members are aware of how a project becomes part of the IDP, and they are encouraged to follow that process for this road to be part of the IDP,” explained Mr April.

Due to the poor condition of First Avenue in Sea Park, a Ray Nkonyeni Municipality’s Technical Services (roads) truck got stuck in a ditch.

He said the municipality has acquired a grant from the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) for the development of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality’s roads and stormwater management.

Mr April said the municipality also made an application to KZN Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), in May 2019, requesting funding for roads and stormwater repairs and maintenance due to damage caused by April 2019 floods. The municipality is still awaiting their response.
