Veteran Sunwich Port athlete wins medals
He clinched first place in the 100m and 200m sprint events at the KZN Provincial Masters Athletics Championships.
Retired firefighter, Max Magnussen (73) from Sunwich Port, earned medals at the KZN Provincial Masters Athletics Championships at Kings Park Athletic Stadium recently.
He won the 200m sprint in the 70-74 year age category in a time of 33.74 seconds. He then clinched first place in the 100m dash in a time of 16.34 seconds. Both times were within the provincial medal standard.
Max also took part in the inaugural Beaver Creek parkrun at Port Edward. “This event was the most beautiful trail run through the farmlands and indigenous vegetation. I came first in my age category, 70-74. So far, he has completed 252 parkruns at various locations.
He also met the legendary Bruce Fordyce at the event.
In 2023, Max and some 3000 firefighters took part in more than 40 sporting codes at the World Firefighters’ Games in Aalborg, Denmark. He returned home with four gold medals and a silver. He won gold in the 100m, 200m, 400m and triple jump and silver in the long jump.
Max was based at eThekwini Fire Department in Durban for 33 years.
