Free health services offered

The three-day programme at the Malangeni Sports Ground was well supported.

ROTARY Family Health Days took place at several venues across the Ugu District recently.

The three-day programme at the Malangeni Sports Ground – from Wednesday to Friday last week – was well supported by young and old alike.

The health services were offered free of charge and included:

Vital health care monitoring: Blood pressure, blood sugar, BMI measurements, pulse rate and referrals if needed.

Chronic care: Diabetes, hypertension and referrals if needed.

Child health: Deworming medication, malnourishment screening, vitamin A supplement, weighing, ante-natal care and referrals if needed.

Sister Vicky Sikhosana, Mokwanda Luthuli, Mekhosi Ndwalane, Nomfundo Sosibo and Dr Muhammed Peer were on hand to take of dental problems and offer sound advice.

Vaccinations – Measles first and second dose and polio.

HIV – Testing, pre-counselling and if positive initiation on the same day.

TB – Symptomatic screening, TB treatment defaulter, referral and sputum collection.

Male medical circumcision – Counselling, procedure, referral and education.

Family planning: Counselling, referral, female condoms provided, pap smear and pregnancy testing.

Scottburgh Rotarians Jenny Laight and Cherilynn Poynter with Sphiwe Khanyile of Umdoni Municipality and sister Vicky Sikhosana from GJ Crookes Hospital at the free health clinic.

Sexually transmitted infections – screening and referrals, education and free condoms.

The Malangeni outreach also offered free eye testing and dental care.

Local Rotarians, the Scottburgh Lions Club and GJ Crookes Hospital staffers all lent a helping hand at the clinic.
