LAST week’s clean-up on Commercial Road saw the community coming together to do the municipality’s job. Heaps of collected rubbish was placed neatly in piles for the cleansing department to collect.

As yet nothing has been collected and your scribe suspects that people are removing things and taking them back into the bushes for reuse. The gap in communication between residents, the municipality’s senior management and the force on the ground is very frustrating. A pick-up has now been scheduled.
Causing a stink
The bad smell in and around Umtentweni recently has been emanating from the sugar mill. A meeting to discuss the environmental impact of by-product excess from the plant which has caused the community a lot of concern and discontent has been arranged with all stakeholders to hopefully find solutions.

Lights out
Traffic lights at the Abingdon intersection were out of order the whole of last weekend. It had been reported and the assurance was that both the traffic and electrical departments would be notified.
Pointsmen never arrived during peak traffic and the pedestrian crossing was a nightmare on Monday this week. People literally took their lives into their own hands.
Annual reunion
The KZN South Coast Branch of the Grahamstown Teachers’ Training College will hold their annual reunion at Umdoni Retirement Village on Saturday, November 9. Celebrations will take the form of tea at 10am, followed by a service in the chapel and a bring and share lunch.
Reverend Jenny Mitchell of Bushy Vales will lead the service. Any old girls who require assistance with transport or further information must please contact Jenny Mitchell at 073 3219316.
Out and about
The Collectables ventured south to St Mike’s for their monthly lunch last week. It was a good turnout and wonderful to see Josie Stonebridge sporting a new hairstyle and looking gorgeous.
Hazel Steyn looks very well after her visit to family in Canada and Gladys Rothman, who visited family in New Zealand earlier this year, says that her family love the freedom in New Zealand. They
did a lot of walking and enjoyed many outdoor activities together.
Birthdays this week are John Saunders (7th), Luke Lindsay (9th), Roger Paine (11th), Sean van Tonder and Clayton Abercrombie (12th) and Chrissy Wilson (14th).
