This latest production brings to life the stories of living with the ocean that are seldom heard in the public domain.
SEVERAL researcher-activist-theatre makers formed a group known as Empatheatre which recently produced Lalela uLwandle (listen to the sea).
The group toured the province before their formal theatre production in the UKZN’s Square Space Theatre this week.

This latest production brings to life the stories of living with the ocean that are seldom heard in the public domain.
These stories came about after the members spent seven months collecting research on this topic.
Lalela uLwandle shows the reality of people involved directly and indirectly with the ocean, as well as creating a new social platform that makes public dialogue possible regarding the ocean’s health.

After each of their shows on the South Coast, the audience was encouraged to participate in a public dialogue, facilitated by the research team from Rhodes University and the Durban University of Technology.
Entrance to the public performances was free, and locally, a show was staged at the Umzinto Town Hall last week.
