NSRI Shelly Beach seeks volunteers

Anyone between the ages of 16 and 60 can join.

NSRI Shelly Beach held an open day last Saturday morning to recruit volunteers.

According to Station Commander Glen Preston, anyone between the ages of 16 and 60 who is interested in saving lives can join up.

“There is a role for everybody; you don’t need to go into the sea. There are duties such as maintenance, assisting on call-outs, and being an on-air observer.”

Preston said there are no costs involved, but one has to be dedicated, and the cost of training is covered by NSRI.

Training takes place over six months, with 30 online modules for theory as well as practicals.

Thomas Stevens and Ethan Odendaal show people around the station.

“Specialist training is also available; a person is sent to Cape Town or the trainers come to Shelly Beach. All expenses are covered, and that would qualify one to become a coxswain.”

He added that there are no restrictions in terms of fitness, weight, height, or whether one can swim or not.

To find out more, visit NSRI Shelly Beach every alternate Thursday or Saturday.
