Rocky to the rescue as dog warns owner of 2,2m black mamba

When the mamba saw Eddie it lifted its head in attack mode.

Eddie Cutting of Port Edward’s day might have ended on an entirely different note if it wasn’t for his clever and loyal dog named Rocky.

Rocky saved Eddie’s life last week when he warned him of a large black mamba measuring 2.2 metres stretched out on the kitchen table.

It was a hot day and Eddie said they had just come back from a walk and swim at a nearby dam.

“I was about to make some coffee when I noticed Rocky’s behaviour and his interest in something on the kitchen table,” he said.

“Just by the size of the snake, I knew it was a black mamba chilling on my kitchen table,” said Eddie, adding that he screamed like a schoolgirl.

Eddie quickly got Rocky and himself out of the house, but a few minutes later he went back inside to search for the snake.

After systematically searching the entire house, he discovered it lurking in the studio. When the mamba saw Eddie, it lifted its head in attack mode.

Eddie admits to screaming again but quickly managed to close the door and the window of the room.

Eddie then called the coast’s famous snake catcher, Sarel van der Merwe.

Eddie praised Sarel for an excellent job, adding he was ‘quick, professional and efficient’.

“I am so glad nobody got hurt, including the snake,” said Eddie.

He also praised his ‘hero’ dog for saving his life, as Rocky was so close to the mamba that it could have easily bitten him.

“This is not the first time Rocky has alerted me to a snake. I’m very proud of him. He is my best mate of seven years. He is so protective of me, that only a bullet will take him down.”
