WATER UPDATE: Spring tide poses additional threat

Ugu will continue to post updates as new information is received from the water services department.

Many South Coast residents are without water in the Ugu District, reportedly due to high salinity levels, which has prompted Ugu to shut down the St Helens Rock pump station.

Areas affected include Port Shepstone, Boboyi, Murchison and Gamalakhe.

Ugu said the pump station was offline due to high salinity levels but that there had been an improvement from 1000 ms/m to 381 ms/m.

This this will be monitored closely during the 4pm spring tide.

The Bhobhoyi plant is also offline.

NORTHERN SYSTEM:

The Umzimkhulu command reservoir is empty and there is no supply to Northern System.

The Woodgrange system and Anerly system have minimum reserves.

Customers are urged to use water sparingly. Due to inadequate supply from Umthavuna system, water relief will be prioritised.

Port Shepstone CBD off 12A reservoir will start experiencing low pressure to no water.

SOUTHERN SYSTEM:

In the Seaslopes supply area – Ramsgate south, Kaisers and Nosita – there is no supply.

Ramsgate North has minimum reserve and consumers are urged to use water sparingly. Water relief is being scheduled.

Gamalakhe is empty, including the conjoined system of Msikaba, Betania and Nyandezulu.

Shelly beach reservoirs are at 50 percent and Ugu requests consumers to use as little water as possible.

Margate CBD and Manaba supply systems are down.

Marburg/Oslo beach system is down, including the industrial areas.

Murchison system is down and the priority will be given to Murchison hospital.

UMZUMBE:

Fairview/Magog, feeding off the 525 from Umzimkhulu, are affected. There is temporary augmentation supply from Mhlabashane system.

Nine of the 14 internal water tankers available for scheduled programme and standby will assist with relief.

Construction of the temporary berm with flaps will start tomorrow (Tuesday) with expected completion on Thursday.
