Margate Moves: Have a Halloween hoot
If you are in the mood for a little spooky fun then get to the tavern this Friday.
Many believe that Halloween is evil and pagan, however, it is an ancient Christian celebration, dating back to the Celtic festival better known Samhain (summer’s end).
The Celts believed that ghosts and the dead returned to earth on All Hallows’ Eve (October 31) the evening before All Saints’ Day (November 1) and legend has it that unless they (the spirits) were given treats they would play tricks on the outcome of the next year’s harvest.
During the festivities, the poor would also go door to door to beg for food and in return for soul food they would pray for the family’s dead relatives on All Souls’ Day (November 2).
On the South Coast, Halloween will be celebrated at a great dress-up party at the Village Tavern in Margate. Fantastic prizes will be given to the best-dressed man, woman and couple. If you are in the mood for a little spooky fun then get to the tavern this Friday, November 1, for lots of treats and the odd trick.
