Crash victims laid to rest at mass funeral

A collision involving a minibus taxi and a sugar cane truck claimed the lives of seven people.

Transport MEC Bheki Ntuli has paid his last respects to five of the seven people who victims of the seven who died in a horrific crash on Old St Faith’s Road near Louisiana recently.

The MEC attended a mass funeral for the Mtolo family at Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre in Gamalakhe last Saturday.

A collision involving a minibus taxi and a sugar cane truck claimed the lives of Patrick (38), Xolisani (38), Sibonelo (31) Mondli (24) and Lusanda (10) from Gamalakhe.

Nombuso Mvundla (34) and Sifiso Tshabalala (33) also died in the crash.

“We are all here to pay our last respect to the victims whose lives were cut short under very tragic circumstances. Our roads should not be gravesites, each death on our roads is one death too many,” said Mr Ntuli.

The MEC reminded motorists to obey the rules of the road and to remain patient with other drivers at all times.

Clive Brauteseth of the Brauteseth Blasting Group said he had lost two employees, Xolisani and Sibonelo, as a result of the crash.

Mr Brauteseth described them as hardworking, saying said he had been deeply saddened by their passing and shared words of condolence with the family.

Transport MEC Bheki Ntuli said that even one death on the roads was a death too many.

Ugu District Municipality Mayor, Sizwe Ngcobo; Ray Nkonyeni Municipality Mayor Cythia Mqwebu; Deputy Mayor Ronnie Nair and Speaker Doctor Njoko, along with colleagues, friends and family were also present.

The family expressed their appreciation to all those involved in arranging such a dignified funeral for their loved ones.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
