Hibberdene Happenings: Book for the special breakfast
The next men's breakfast at the Methodist Church will include wives or partners.
The Methodist men’s breakfast last Saturday featured a previous speaker, former SAPS captain Theo Goldstone, who was instrumental in solving many murders in the area in years gone by. He spoke about a murder that occurred in the Creighton/Donnybrook area on June 26, 1994, when a burnt-out Mercedes-Benz with two charred bodies inside was found on the outskirts of Donnybrook.

Extensive investigations identified the men as Noel Hardman and André Steyn of Creighton, who had left their homes on the previous day to travel to Bulwer. With the help of the-then head of forensic medicine at UKZN, specialist pathologist Professor Steve Naidoo, it was established that the men had been shot in a different location and some time before the actual fire.
Captain Goldstone gave an enthralling account of investigations leading to solving the murders, which held his audience absolutely spellbound. Three men were arrested in connection with the killings and were given varying prison sentences.
For the next breakfast scheduled for December 7 at 7am, all men are requested to bring their wives or partners along and single women are also most welcome to attend. Men will pay R30 each and women will pay a donation, but space is limited so book as soon as possible with Debbie at 039 6992948.
Pop in
Remember Mtwalume’s flea and craft market this coming Saturday (9th) from 9am at the pool at Koelwaters Resort. There will be delicious food and all sorts of interesting odds and ends on sale, so take this opportunity to start your Christmas shopping early.
Andy Els is waiting and raring to go to present his special brand of music to keep marketgoers entertained.
Jumble sale
Your scribe apologises for advertising the inaugural service of the new Methodist minister last Sunday when it had already been postponed to some time in the future. Apologies for any inconvenience caused.
However, the church’s summer jumble sale on Saturday, November 30, from 8.30am to 12pm is still going ahead, so make sure you go through your cupboards in the next couple of weeks and sort out anything that might be useful as a sale item.
Lest we forget
Next Monday marks Poppy Day or the Day of Remembrance when we remember those men and women who gave their lives during the two world wars, the Border War and other conflicts throughout the world. They made the ultimate sacrifice and for that we are grateful.
Happy birthday
Belated birthday greetings go to Judy Aiston for November 3rd, while this week’s celebrants are Joan Tilbury and Johnny Matthews (6th), Clasmé Jacobz (7th), Johan Els and Sue Thomas (9th), Alta Jordaan (10th) and Parvathy Pillay, Pat Oosthuizen and Paul Seymour (12th).
What a woeful, waterless week it was. Thank goodness for the Springbok victory last Saturday which had, bar none, celebrating until late into the night.
An absolutely magnificent achievement. Did you feel the earth tremor last Thursday afternoon? Your scribe did and thought the end was nigh, but fortunately life carried on as usual.
Barry Guppy has returned to Hibberdene after spending some eight months visiting his 92-year old mom and other family members in the UK. He is warmly welcomed back.
Don’t forget to keep Liz busy with Hibberdene news and snippets.
