Margate Moves: Water woes on hold for 80 minutes

Water trickled back for a short while late last Sunday evening, but by Monday morning it had, like Houdini, disappeared.

Thanks to the outstanding Rugby World Cup win by the superb Springboks last Saturday, waterless Ramsgate residents were able to have something to cheer about, after almost two weeks of dry taps.

Water trickled back for a short while late last Sunday evening, but by Monday morning it had, like Houdini, disappeared. There are static tanks at Pistol’s Saloon, Lions’ Community Hall and at the Hibiscus Mall, and residents who have water are urged to use it sparingly in order for reservoirs to fill up.

Burglary rate drops

Ramsgate Community Policing Forum held its AGM recently. Presenting his annual report, chairman Richard Phillips said attempted burglary and burglary incidents had dropped to about 10 per month (55 percent decrease) and that a significant increase in the number of arrests had been made in an attempt to drive crime down in the village.

One of the other highlights of the past year had been the recognition given at the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality’s Mayoral Awards ceremony where Ramsgate was named the best CPF.

Certificates of appreciation for exemplary contributions were given to Constable Chantel Young and operations coordinator, Quinn Meecham at the AGM. Richard Phillips, Chantel Young, Ann Phillips, Lucia Nkomo, Peter Killian, Carol Ann Vorster, Alister Edwards and Stefano Francesconi were elected to serve on the 2019/2020 committee.

No blue flag

For many years Margate and Ramsgate beaches proudly flew Blue Flags indicating that international coastal management criteria had been met and maintained. Margate lost its status a while back but Ramsgate continued to be marketed as a Blue Flag beach.

It was announced last week that Wessa had removed Ramsgate from this year’s crop of 45 Blue Flag beaches countrywide. However, as the beach met all the requisites bar one it has been given pilot status. Ramsgate Conservancy appeals to residents and ratepayers to support their efforts to get the Blue Flag status back, as well as the many tourism projects it undertakes.

Subscriptions range from R50 for students, R100 for single membership, R150 for family membership and R500 for business or corporate membership.

Be moonstruck

The conservancy invites everyone to watch the full moon rise over the ocean next week. Moondeckers will gather at the Ramsgate Whale Deck on Tuesday, November 12 from 5.30pm. There will be prego rolls on sale at R40 per person. And also remember to take some extra cash for the lucky draw.

Please RSVP to Adrian Voice at 083 2867901 before November 11 for catering purposes. Moonrise is expected at about 6.20pm.

Take a toy

Ramsgate Lions Club holds its annual Toy Run this Sunday (10th). Bikers will leave from St Mike’s beachfront and ride in convoy to Douglas Mitchell Sports Grounds. Everyone taking part needs to meet at the beach from 9.30am and the entry fee is one toy per person.

There will be fun activities including lucky draws at the Douglas Mitchell drop off and burgers will be on sale. For more information phone Lion Joan Robinson at 082 3396648.

Deepest sympathy

Stalwart Shafts member Sheila Steyn from Ramsgate died recently. Her memorial service takes place today (6th) at St Michael’s Sands at 12pm. Condolences are extended to Trevor Read and her family.

Welcome wagon

This week the red carpet is rolled out for Phil and Anna Beck who are back in Ramsgate for a holiday. The Becks hail from Broadstairs, which is sandwiched between Margate and Ramsgate in Kent, England. The family owned a holiday home in Ramsgate and were regular visitors until a few years back when they sold their property here. But they have missed the people of the South Coast and are back this week.
