Fidler in the Hood: Did the earth move for you?
The entire South Coast had a dose of the ‘eebie-jeebies’ as homes shook, rattled and rolled.
Well, what a week, despite our doom and gloom merchants predicting the end of the world is nigh. No, it doesn’t refer to our ‘Great Leaders’, local, provincial and national level, but to the rugby pundits who predicted the ’Boks were in for a ‘reet thumping’. As the saying goes ‘Put that in your pipe and smoke it!’

And, while we are at it – It’s great to be a South African! Well, this week, at least. On with the show.
Excuses, excuses
The local talking point was the earth tremor which hit the Hibiscus Coast last Thursday. Short, but not very sweet. The entire South Coast had a dose of the ‘eebie-jeebies’ as homes shook, rattled and rolled. It was all over in a matter of seconds, but too close for comfort.
Still, it gave Ugu Municipality yet another excuse for the disruption of domestic water supplies and Ray Nkonyeni a chance to further delay repairing the sorry state of local suburban roads – or what’s left of them.
What’s in a name?
Tried to reassure the CO by wittily asking “Did the earth move for you, darling?” “Not exactly,’ she retorted “but the wardrobe doors came open.” She does have a certain Irish way with words! Of course, the CO is on a roll, claiming her family name Pollard inspired the Bokke to glory.
‘Our Handré this, our Handré that’ even though the real Handré Pollard bears no resemblance and dwarfs this here Molly Malone. If it helps ‘the cause’ and brings peace to all men, so be it friends.
KO for the PO
Remember the good old days when you went to your local post office to send mail overseas or anything related to a postal service? Acknowledging that we live in the electronics era, when one can do a lot business online, there is still a need for a local post office.
Not anymore, friends. Manaba, Hibiscus Mall and Shelly Beach post offices have closed their doors and shut up shop, without any notice. There is just one local PO left – in Uvongo. We should be grateful for small mercies.
Not that we ever had service from that branch in the four years we had a post box there. We gave up, as we did with Telkom. A sign of the times: things ain’t what they used to be.
The good news is that the ‘Deadwood Stage’ is comin’ over the hills and Doris Day will be making an appearance as Calamity Jane. Whatever happened to Wells Fargo?
Telkom tittle-tat
Your scribe met good friends Bruno and Brigitta Gentili of Margate whilst keeping fit on Lilliecrona Boulevard. The couple is still recovering from their own traumatic experiences from a day spent at Telkom even though they had fair warning that dealing with Telkom was not funny. To no avail.
Being Italian/German, they knew all about efficiency and service. After four hours, they were nearly there, ready to sign up, until a ‘slight problem’ occurred. Fraulein Gentilli had become Mrs Gumede, residing in Umdoni. The assistant demanded that she proves she was not Mrs Gumede, as according to her ID number on the computer screen, she was definitely Mrs Gumede.
Next problem – how were they going to pay? Now, there’s nothing like an Italian explosion: Mount Vesuvius’s volcano is a mere rumble. The rest is history. Latest bulletin is that Bruno and Brigitta are doing well in a sanatorium somewhere secret. Another week in paradise. See you, Rob.
