Single mom Sophia completes MBA degree
Ms Mathakutha says she has always preferred to work closer to home where she is surrounded by her loved ones.
Proud mom, Sophia Mathakutha (37) who works at the Ray Nkonyeni municipality’s treasury unit in the payroll section, recently obtained her Master of Business Administration degree.
As a single mom, she says her journey to obtaining her degree was very challenging.

“Being determined kept me going, even during the times when I had to leave my child with relatives to attend classes and juggle my role at RNM.”
Having grown up in Bhobhoyi, life was not always easy for Ms Mathakutha, but her determination and drive stood her in good stead.
“I’m not a quitter, I love new challenges and I always strive to finish what I started,” she noted.
This go-getter attended Merlewood Primary and Haythorne Secondary in Pietermaritzburg before obtaining her National Diploma and Bachelor of Technology degree at the Durban University of Technology in Human Resources.
Ms Mathakutha says she has always preferred to work closer to home where she is surrounded by her loved ones.
She strongly encourages other women to empower themselves by becoming educated.
“You can achieve anything if you put your mind to it. Go out there and make your mark despite the challenges of this world.”
