Hibberdene Happenings: Would-be car thieves foiled by locked gate
Obviously the criminals thieves had cased the joint and knew just how long the guards would be patrolling.
Your scribe is always on the lookout for news, but not to the extent that it concerns herself. An attempt was made to steal your scribe and Steve’s bakkie from its parking area in the resort in the early hours of Saturday morning by two individuals who somehow snuck in while security guards were conducting their scheduled patrol around the property.

Obviously the would-be thieves had cased the joint and knew just how long the guards would be patrolling. What they didn’t know however, is that the gate is manually locked during the guards’ absence and they were unable to drive the bakkie out. At this point, your scribe woke up and, peeping through the bedroom window, was able to watch them beat a hasty retreat, obviously having an escape route lined up.
It is a frightening fact that one can’t be careful enough these days – as ‘skelms’ are always around. Unfortunately your scribe’s camera, which was in the cubby hole, was stolen, and this is going to complicate sending in photos for the Bonus.
Ring the dates
Remember the Methodist jumble sale this Saturday from 8.30am to 12 noon. By now you should have cleared your cupboards and delivered your donation to the church. And don’t forget the Bethanien Lutheran Church’s Christmas market at Izotsha this Saturday from 9am. This market is always great fun, so please support it.
The Methodist men’s breakfast ‘with a difference’ takes place next Saturday, December 7, at 7am at the church.
This time round, wives and partners are included in the invitation, but please book timeously with Debbie at 039 6992948 as space is limited. Men pay the usual R30 entrance fee and women are requested to pay a donation.
And the next day, Sunday 8th, is the day everyone in the congregation has been waiting for – the day they meet the new minister, Reverend Annalie Kotze, at the communion service. Tea will be served afterwards and, as an added bonus, a police choir will perform during the service. It will be something not to be missed.
Rubbish piles up
Potholes in Woodgrange have been filled in in several places and roads are looking considerably better than they did a few weeks ago. Thanks to those responsible. But the dumping! The town and surroundings appears to have become a dumping ground for all sorts of rubbish.
The eye clinic closed for the year last Wednesday and thanks are extended to Kazi Shabalala, who took over from Brian Williams at the beginning of the year and certainly proved her worth. The clinic will reconvene in the middle of February.
Happy birthday
Celebrating birthdays this week are Gusta Ludick (28th), Charles Greener (29th), Marina Loubser, Kathy Marsden, Malcolm McManus and Freddy Pillay (December 2), Marlene Barnard and Danny Parsons (3rd), and Karen Leite (4th).
Kotie Boshoff is welcomed back home after her quick trip to America – it is good to see her again. Black Friday strikes again this weekend and happy bargain-hunting to all those heading off to the shops for their annual spree.
