Turtle Creek champs ace quiz

Eight primary schools recently donned their thinking caps and took part in the annual Phendulani Literacy Quiz, a national event aimed at encouraging reading-for-pleasure amongst learners at less well-resourced schools, at CFC Ministries in Southbroom.

The quiz was organised by Sithanda ukufunda – We love to read, a registered non-profit organisation that operates a mobile library which takes reading books to rural primary schools on the lower South Coast of KZN and adjoining areas of Eastern cape Cape. The organisation distributes some 9 500 books enabling more than 10 000 learners access to age-appropriate reading books every term.

The outcome of the quiz saw Turtle Creek Preparatory garnering enough points to be crowned this year’s champions. Ithuba Wild Coast Community College came second with two schools in third spot: Entabebi Combined Primary and Ithongasi Full Service Primary. Other schools who participated were Ebomvini Combined Primary, Dlukulwane Primary and KwaMphelelwa Combined Primary.

Jenny Barker, one of the organisers of the quiz said it was always going to be fun to host young pupils in such a way that they learn from speaking words which are not used daily. “These pupils are all winners but there must be an overall winner in a competition. It gives us hope that these young children will go a long way in empowering themselves in education,” she said.

Turtle Creek Preparatory teacher Denise Ralfe said she is proud of her team and that they will be back next year to defend the title.
